
Since 1863, US citizens have celebrated Thanksgiving by imitating the image of the pilgrims and the Indians sitting down together for a pleasant banquet. As nice as this vision of harmony may well be, it is not the reality. The saga of pilgrims and Indians was one of one-sided amity. while the Indians presented the pilgrims with sustenance and methods to make it through their first winter the pilgrims thanked them by antagonizing and lashing out at them. Even though this is not what we prefer to picture as we get together to dine with our friends and family, maybe it gives a new aspect to the day. The pilgrims were greedy and underhanded. They took from the Indians and reciprocated in the most severe ways possible. Maybe instead of imitating the ideal story of the pilgrims and Indians as companions each Thanksgiving, we should look back on the disloyalty the Indians experienced at the hands of their "friends" the pilgrims.
Now I don't mean that Thanksgiving should be a somber day of contemplation and retrospection, but maybe we should take the day to think about our own relationships. Of all the things we are thankful for on Thanksgiving, the individuals we appreciate should be at the very top. Thanksgiving is not only a time for us to share our many blessings with friends and family, but to convey our gratitude for their loyal friendship.
